As job seekers the most important part of their job search is getting that first opportunity to be able to show the prospective employer that they are the right person for the job. To better prepare yourself for that interview, it's a good idea to consider having someone you know and who will be honest with you to help give you a practice interview. When consider doing this, you will need to try and make this practice interview resemble what you think the actual interview is going to be like. By conducting one of these interviews is going to help you be more relaxed and confident at the real one.
The first thing you should do as soon as you find out that you have an interview is to go to the company website and find out as much as you can about the company and the job itself. You should be able to find enough information from their website to be able to help you create your practice interview.
From the information that you gather from the company website it's a good idea to make up a questionnaire that contains 15 to 20 questions that you want your practice interviewer to ask you. These need to be questions that you think from the information you gathered, that the real interviewer may ask. Make sure that you practice answering the questions even before your practice interview.
Now take the practice interview to the person you have chosen to do this with you. If you can, find someone you know that perhaps has given real interviews before. This will help the interview seem more realistic if you have someone who knows what an interviewer is going to be looking for. Even if they haven't that's OK. No matter what, make sure that you ask the person to go over the questions and see if they feel there is anything missing and let them add questions they think themselves might be asked.
Another thing you might want to consider doing is asking several people you know to take part in an interview process that requires a panel of interviewers. There are some companies that will sit you down in front of several different people who will go around the table and ask you their own set of questions. This type of interview is far more difficult and stressful so it's a good idea that you plan for this type as well in case you walk in for the interview and that's what you end up having to face is a panel of different people instead of just one.
Once you are done with the practice interview it's a good idea that you ask your friend for their honest opinion of how they think you did on the interview. See if they can help you come up with different ways in which you might be able to improve upon your weak points. You also might want to have the interview recorded so you can listen to it later and hear for yourself where your weaknesses might be.
