If you are working and you discover that things at home and your personal life are changing and there isn't much that you can do about those changes, you might need to consider the fact that you may have to approach your boss about trying to get your work scheduled changed. This might seem like something you may not be able to do but if you go to your boss with the issue with respect and are professional, it might not be as bad as you think.
Before you take this to your boss however; you need to sit down and figure out what your needs actually are. Realizing that you might need a new work schedule is the first step but you also need to figure out exactly why you need this schedule change. What things are demanding more of your time that you need to change your hours and figure out how redoing your schedule is going to help with these new demands.
The next thing you should do is to know what your company's policy might be on work schedules and what kind of options they might have to offer. Do they allow a flexible type of schedule, will they allow you to work at home, can you work multiple shifts. Figure this out and what might work for you before you approach your boss.
Take a notepad and write down all of your priorities with the number one priority listed at the top and all others listed in order after the top priority. This will help you to focus on how you will approach your boss and be convincing on the reasoning behind the work schedule change request.
Then you should create an outline for the proposal with the schedule that you think will work best for you and present this to your boss. However; make sure that you have given your boss enough time to prepare for the meeting between the two of you. Make sure that you pick a time that works best for the two of you and make sure that it's definitely not during the first part of the day when your shifts start nor should it be before lunch or just before everyone goes home. A good time is probably a couple of hours into the shift or sometime after lunch.
When you have your meeting you can then go over the outline with your boss. Make sure that you are dressed nice for the meeting and that you are at least 10 minutes earlier than the actual meeting time. Whatever you do, don't be late for the meeting. Also, never start your conversation with you have a problem. A boss hates hearing those words. Just be relaxed and start the conversation with respect.
Remain as professional as you can throughout the entire meeting and don't let yourself get frustrated if it doesn't turn out exactly the way you hoped it would, if it doesn't, see if there can't be a compromise and always make sure that you leave the meeting to where there can be open communication about the issue later.
